Cut down on the use of paper: Do not print this e-mail till necessary. We all see this message written on the mails we exchange so many times in a day. But how many times do we really care to stop the unnecessary printing of the data? The first and foremost step in checking the use of natural resources is to cut down on the paper wastage.
This can be made possible by either making few points very clear to the employees that they need to use smaller fonts and they also need to print on both the sides.
The carbon emission should be regularly checked: It should be made a company policy that the carbon emission should be checked regularly.
Bins should be effectively managed: Bins should be properly labeled such that paper, metal and plastic do not mix together. Certain penalties and rewards should be attached to the employees so that they feel motivated for the cause.
The overall air conditioning can be modulated: There can be a great difference in the electricity bills even if the air conditioning is reduced by one degree! It should be made mandatory for the employees to switch off the computers when not in use. Reports say that even a single computer when left switched on throughout the day can produce 1,500 pounds of CO2 in a single year. The entire effort requires the employees to understand that these steps are being taken for their benefit only.
Switching to energy efficient lighting: The management should consider switching to energy saver lights so that the electricity bills can be controlled and at the same time consumption of non-renewable source of energy can be checked. Motion-sensitive lights can be considered for this purpose.
Car pool ins should be rewarded: As mentioned earlier, small-small efforts by the employees should be rewarded. Considering transportation needs of the employees is a great idea. Mini buses or cars can be plied by office as well for some fee so that the diesel petrol can be saved and of course the parking problem too shall be sorted out to quite an extent. Video conferencing is also another option of reducing the travelling, time and effort.
